Are American-Brand Cars Actually Made in America?

A car may seem like a single, complete piece, but in reality there are multiple parts to every vehicle, most of which are not constructed at the same location. Generally the engine of a vehicle will be built in a place different from where the whole thing is constructed, and most vehicles are made from parts sourced from all over the world. Many American-brand cars are still assembled in the United States, but most are made from parts from everywhere.

What is the most American-made vehicle of 2017?

It’s so hard to find a vehicle that is made completely in one country that Cars.com recently had to change its criteria for establishing what cars issued for 2017 were the most made-in-America. Vehicles that qualified for the 2017 evaluation were judged on the percentage of parts that came from North America, where the vehicle was assembled, where the engine and transmission were constructed, and how many U.S. jobs the vehicle created (adjusted by sales). The results may surprise you!

The top American-made vehicle of 2017 was the Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, closely followed by the Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (a four-door model) was made with 75 percent domestic parts, while the Jeep Cherokee was made with 70 percent domestic parts. These were some of the highest percentages observed this year. Some other winners included the Ford Taurus, Ford F-150, Ford Expedition and GMC Acadia. Many of these models are available in our used inventory here at Third Coast Auto Group.

Some non-American brands are made in the USA

It might surprise some folks that vehicles like the Honda Ridgeline, Acura RDX, Honda Odyssey and Honda Pilot also made the top ten 2017 most American-Made index. These vehicles are also constructed in the United States, and use many domestic parts.
