While raw crude oil is not used directly in our vehicles, the oil used to lubricate engines is derived from refined crude oil<\/strong>. In addition, gasoline and diesel fuel are also extracted from crude oil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is crude oil used for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The majority of crude oil extracted and distilled is used to produce energy carriers that can be combined into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, and heating oil. Taking a typical barrel of crude oil, 50% is used as gasoline, 40% as diesel fuel, heating oil, jet fuel, and kerosene, and 10% as residual fuel oil. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That last one, \u201cresidual fuel oil,\u201d is not the same as motor oil. It\u2019s a heavier, lower-value product that\u2019s used for heavy-duty jobs such as fueling ocean-faring ships, making electricity, and powering factories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly is crude oil?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Crude oil is the form oil is in once it\u2019s pumped from the ground. A complex series of processes is undertaken afterwards, known as \u201crefining.\u201d This is what yields the finished petroleum products we use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is crude oil the same as motor oil?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No, crude oil refers to unrefined oil. Unlike motor oil, it won\u2019t meet the desired viscosity specifications, won\u2019t contain additives to control oxidation, and won\u2019t offer optimal flow while still resisting high temperatures and pressures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refining crude oil allows one to obtain the portion that can be further refined into motor oil. In addition to the qualities above, additives remove water, provide anti-sludge and anti-rust qualities, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
