Vehicles with a manual or conventional gearbox are known as stick shifts. As they speed and decelerate, the driver switches gears manually with a stick shift. A linkage connects this shift lever to the transmission, which is positioned on the center console. A manual transmission requires a clutch pedal, which is located to the left of the brake pedal, in addition to a stick shift. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch mechanism between the engine and the gearbox is disengaged.
