New cars from brands like Pontiac, Mercury and Saturn might not be rolling off production lines anymore, but many of these name plates can still be found out on our roads, and in the inventories of used car dealerships. This might lead to many car shoppers wondering, “Should I buy a car from a brand that no longer exists?”

Servicing a car from an orphan brand

One of the key concerns owners of an orphan car brand may have is where they will service their vehicle. While you would not be able to find a Pontiac dealership anymore, this does not mean you are out of luck.

Most of the brand names that have been eliminated were owned by larger companies. Pontiac and Saturn were both subsidiaries of General Motors, while the Mercury name was owned by Ford. Most of these sub-brands shared components with other vehicles in the company’s lineup. Some even share platforms with vehicles still being produced.

Read More: Are you looking for a pre-owned truck model that offers good fuel economy ratings?

What this all means is that compatible parts for orphan cars are still being made. Most service centers will continue to serve vehicles from brands that were at one point under their OEM umbrella. Finding a service center for an orphan car should not be a concern.

The same precautions should be taken when considering an orphan car than a vehicle of any other brand.
