Many cars come with what are called “nuisance alarms”. As the name implies, these are loud, obnoxious shrieking sounds that are meant to frighten off car thieves (though they are often more useful for scaring car owners and irritating neighbors). The easiest way to shut off your vehicle’s alarm is to hit the lock or alarm button on your keyfob. However, what do you do if your keyfob is broken, low on battery, or you are unfortunate enough to have a car with an alarm but not a keyfob? Here are a few ways to stop a car alarm without a key fob. Hopefully, one will work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Check your owner’s manual<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every vehicle is different. Your owner’s manual is the best place to find out how to stop your alarm if it goes off (and to not break your car at the same time). We don’t know what your manual says, but in a perfect world, it will help you. Don’t know where your owner’s manual is? You can find many owner’s manuals online<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lock your doors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Getting into the car and locking your doors (assuming you have electric locks) might stop the alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn the car on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It’s exceptionally stressful to sit there and try to turn the car on if the alarm is going off, but if your car will let you turn the ignition, that may stop the alarm, and you can kill two birds with one stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn the ignition on and wait<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If just trying to turn your car on yields no results, try turning the key to the ACC position (where you can play the radio<\/a>, but the engine isn’t running). It may take a few minutes to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull the fuse for the alarm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you aren’t very technically savvy, this step may be a challenge, but it should work. Pulling out the fuse that powers your alarm should stop the alarm (Which fuse is that? You need to check your owner’s manual).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull the wires for your alarm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you or someone you know installed the car alarm (instead of having it come with the vehicle) you may be able to find wires for the alarm under your steering wheel. We do NOT recommend this step unless you know what you are doing and know which wires belong to your alarm and which control important functions of your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disconnect the battery<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Your car alarm runs off power from your car’s main battery or a backup battery. Disconnecting the battery can stop your alarm, but we again only recommend this step if nothing else works AND if you understand how to safely remove a car battery. This may be a step to take at the dealership if your alarm keeps going off and you don’t know why.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
