What can I do with a car’s infotainment system?

Very few industries have been as progressing as quickly from a technology standpoint as the automotive industry. Certainly, performance, safety and fuel economy are better than at any time in history. However, it’s in the area of automotive connectivity where things have really reached a new level. If you’re thinking about upgrading your vehicle to a later model that will be equipped with some of this new technology for the first time, you might be wondering, ‘What can I do with a car’s infotainment system?’ Different manufacturers offer different features, but our team thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the more common functions. Let’s take a look at a few things you might find interesting.

Which smartphones are compatible with infotainment systems?

In the last several years, several automakers have made their infotainment systems compatible with today’s most popular smartphones. The addition of the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ suites of applications have been nothing short of game-changers. Many infotainment systems will offer hands-free calling and messaging capabilities, even without smartphone integration. However, the two suites of apps will expand that ability in very interesting ways.

Of course, the drivers and passengers will be able to take advantage of their favorite apps for podcasts and music while they’re on the road. New apps are being added to both suites every day that will change the way people interact with their vehicles.

Is GPS navigation still an option?

If smartphone-compatible infotainment systems have done everything, they have added a sense of democracy to the technology available to vehicle owners. For too long, native GPS functionality has been the sole domain of high-end luxury vehicles. Using either suite of applications will allow many users to not only navigate to their destination, but they will also be able to take their phones with them to get walking directions if they need to park away from the building their heading to.
