The birth of the automobile has brought about some pretty cool inventions over the last 150 years. One invention in particular that Chevy has taken a liking to recently is the transmission. First we were given the automatic transmission and the world rejoiced. Manual transmissions still exist, but the question of for how long has been around for more than 30 years. The reason for this high level of uncertainty in the standard transmission lies in the fact that automatic transmissions have become exponentially more efficient. We now even have continuously variable transmissions, which is a story for another day. Today, we salute the largest automatic transmission ever to come from Chevrolet Motors.

Ladies and gentleman, it is our pleasure to introduce you to the 9-Speed Chevrolet transmission. In the last year, a few other companies have moved from seven to nine gears, but these are all luxury vehicles. Chevrolet is the first to implement this in an economy car and will soon begin selling it with most of its lineup of quality vehicles. The only other vehicle in the industry with more gears is the new Raptor from Ford, which is in every way shape and form a performance vehicle.

Why add more gears? There are actually a few reasons for this ingenuity. First, with more gears, a vehicle can accelerate faster without actually adding more power or losing weight. Increasing the number of gears also increases efficiency because the car doesn’t have to work as hard at any given RPM, which is a complicated concept, but true nonetheless.
