When it comes to getting yourself and your family where you need to go, it’s important to find the right vehicle. While a compact or midsize sedan, or a smaller crossover or SUV might be just fine if you have a smaller family, more than two or three kids will require a larger vehicle. That is where minivans and three-row crossovers come into play. But are minivans or crossovers better for families? Explore some of the factors below.

Seating and Accessibility

Minivans and three-row crossovers offer more seating than most vehicles. Both of these body styles usually offer seven- or eight-passenger seating, but there are some crossovers that have nine-passenger seating thanks to three bench seats. Minivans are more accessible for children because they have a lower ride height and convenient sliding doors. Three-row crossovers can often be harder to get into, but the do offer the advantages of a tall ride height.

Towing and All-Wheel Drive

Usually a three-row crossover will offer more towing and hauling potential than a minivan. Most minivans will also be available with only a single engine option. Currently, only the Toyota Sienna is available with all-wheel drive. So, families with off-roading needs, or major towing and hauling demands, will definitely want to opt for a three-row crossover.

Family-Friendly Features

Because they are designed for families, both minivans and three-row crossovers often are available with features that will make kids and parents happy. Minivans are often available with a third-row entertainment system and seats that can easily fold into the floor, or slide to allow passengers easy access to the third row. Convenient car seat connectors are also slightly more common on minivans, though they are available on select crossover SUVs as well.
