Should you get a sedan or a hatchback?

When it comes to cars, there are a few basic body styles. A coupe is a two-door model, usually with a traditional trunk, while a sedan is a four-door option. A hatchback is a model that, instead of a trunk, comes with a high back end and an extra rear door that opens into a large cargo area. In this blog post we are going to answer the question “Should you get a sedan or a hatchback?” and explore some pros and cons of both of these body styles.

Should you get a sedan or a hatchback?

Whether you get a hatchback or a sedan will ultimately come down to personal preference and availability, but there are a few things to think about when comparing these two vehicles. Both options have both pros and cons.

Cargo and Passenger Space

Because of the rear height, most hatchbacks will have significantly more interior space than their sedan counterparts. This translates both to more room for luggage and more headroom for rear passengers.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency will vary according to model, but sedans are often lighter and more aerodynamic than hatchbacks. This means that they will often offer better mileage, which can pay off on the daily commute.

Window Visibility

Hatchbacks have better visibility for the driver because of the large rear windows, but most hatchbacks will require a wiper for the rear window. This means another moving part that may break, and windshield wiper fluid that needs to be refilled periodically.

Securing Valuables

One of the advantages of a sedan is that the trunk offers a place to put valuables where they can be locked away out of sight. On a hatchback, extra storage pieces have to be used to hide belongings you don’t want visible through the windows. The storage area of a hatchback can be easier to break into.

Price and Trim Options

Sedans are more common than hatchbacks, which can mean that used vehicle shoppers can find more sedan options whether they are in the market for a compact, midsize or large car. Hatchbacks are also usually only available in more advanced trims, which means that a vehicle shopper on a budget may have fewer affordable options when it comes to hatchback vehicles.
